As a follow up to Rowena's post below you should check out this interesting post from Brooklyn Museum which helps to explain the philosophy behind releasing all possible records even if they are of varying quality.

Great to see we are in good company in this approach. This strategy seems to be becoming more common, as Web 2.0 technology is changing peoples approach to putting infomation on the web.
ReplyDeleteI love their idea of a visual "quality metre" for each record. We could do something similar (though not graphically) using our record stasus field.
Interesting to see they are taking the same approach with reference photos too.

With more & more collections taking this leap, hopefully we too will become less concerned with quality & start getting more of the collection out there. As was demonstrated with the sculpture it can become quite an organic development that most likley would never have happened if the object was not published. Some sort of quality meter is a great way around "quality of information" issues. And why not publish collection management images? At least it's some sort of visual reference.
